CARA Welfare Phils: February 2010 Activities

20th February Adoption event:

A lucky day for 7 cats who were adopted and went home to loving families.

Thanks once again to Hobbes & Landes, Bonifacio High St. Association and lastly Royal Canin for the variety of food donations and cat carriers for the adopted cats.

Free Vaccination Day
28th February, 2010

165 dogs and cats were vaccinated with rabies and other common infectious diseases (canine parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and leptospirosis) in the nearby community of CARA Clinic.  The vaccines which was donated by Virbac Philippines through its local distributor Solano Veterinary Services where administered by senior veterinary students and members of the Society for the advancement of veterinary education and research (SAVER) of De La Salle Araneta University.  The event was conducted in connection with CARA's Spay Day and in support of the upcoming Rabies Month (March).

The  event was organized by Dr. Rey del Napoles (Veterinary Consultant to CARA) with the help of Mae Pastoral and Tess Sumcio (both staff of the CARA clinic). The local executive was so thankful that CARA chose the barangay (community) as recipient of the service as they are forging strong programs to control rabies in the locality.

The community showed great concern for the welfare of their animals by participating in the free vaccination drive. One student was quoted to have been surprised to see that not one dog was brought in dirty or not groomed.  He said "the cotton balls are all clean every after swab on the skin for each inoculation".

A follow through rabies vaccination may be necessary to fully cover all the dogs in the community.

Thank you to the 12 student volunteers who made the vaccination drive fast and efficient.

Spay Day
February 24th, 2010

In line with Humane Society International's launch of Spay Day for the month of February, CARA held its Spay Day on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 at its new clinic in Malate. Our target group were cats and dogs in and around Malate area. The area has relatively low income families who would benefit greatly from the free offer to spay and neuter. It also gave us an excellent opportunity to educate them about spaying their pets. Flyers advertising the free spay day and outlining the benefits of spaying were distributed along with announcements at local gatherings.

Despite the lack of a clinic vet we were able to get support from seven vets who generously donated their time for  the whole day to make this event possible.

Our many thanks to the Vets:
RIZA ZUNIO
REY DEL NAPOLES
MELAY PELAYO
DANILO HICETA
ALLISON SAILE
KATHLEEN TIU
MARJORIE GUMANGAN

In all we spayed and neutered 41 animals

Cats - female (19)
