Compassion for Community Critters

CARA was recently invited by students of Saint Pedro Poveda College to give a talk on “Proper Animal Control and Awareness” for residents of Barangay Bambang in Pasig City.

Over 50 residents attended the event, which was part of a community outreach project spearheaded by a group of high school seniors from Poveda, accompanied by their Christian Living class adviser, Ms Melo.

CARA representative Vimla Mansukhani discussed the benefits of spay/neuter, not only as a humane solution to reducing the population of unwanted stray animals in the community, but also to help eliminate nuisance behavior associated with animals when they go into heat. She also stressed the overall health benefits of sterilizing pets, which has proven to prevent certain types of cancer and infections and help pets to live longer, healthier lives.

The talk was also aimed at educating residents on responsible pet ownership, including vaccinating pets, proper care and feeding and animal safety. It also highlighted the importance of showing kindness and compassion to all animals, whether owned or not. Studies have shown that there is a connection between the ways a society treats its people and its animals. “Animals are like members of family. They have feelings. But unlike us, they cannot speak for themselves,” said Vimla.

After the talk, Vimla answered questions from the audience while the students distributed donated pet food and pamphlets in Tagalog for residents who wanted more information on pet care and the Animal Welfare Act.
