CARA held a fundraising drive at the 5th Filipino Readercon on November 28. We sold pre-loved books at very low prices. Thank you so much to all those who donated books!

It was the first time I volunteered for a CARA event. Our table was filled with books from YAs and Fantasy to Non-Fiction and titles by Filipino authors. Also for sale were gift items, from cute catty bags to sweet accessories for pet lovers.

At first I was uncertain how to help. The senior volunteers got me to sort the books into boxes and to put them back into order when the stacks of books became too messy from handling by customers. I’m so glad our customers appreciated our book selection.

As the day progressed, I observed that many of of those who approached us were not just interested in buying books. They were also interested to find out more about CARA and what we do. I guess this is another very important reason we need to be active in events. We need to raise funds but we also need to promote awareness of responsible pet ownership. We can’t keep on rescuing forever. For one thing, CARA cannot rescue all abused dogs and cats.

The members of CARA are just volunteers like me.

After my shift, I checked out the Filipino Readercon activities. I particularly enjoyed the Spoken Word / Poetry session. I heard that the Speed Dating with Authors and the discussions by different book clubs were also fun. When I registered I got a free book (The Merchant of Venice)!

By the way, the Filipino ReaderCon is a yearly event offering a venue for readers, writers and literature enthusiasts of all shapes and sizes to greet, meet and mingle with one another. Its aim is to push the reading culture in the country and shake things up. Its organizers have been doing this for five years.

This year the host is De La Salle University.

Thanks again to everyone who continues to support CARA and its mission to promote compassion for animals. Thanks to the organizers of the Filipino Readercon for inviting us to participate. Thanks to my fellow volunteers for guiding me. I look forward to becoming an active volunteer and to work with them for animal welfare!
