As part of our series citing the response of animal welfare advocates to the question, “why help animals?” I am posting here the replies of two veterinary students:
Jenille Nabor, vet student and active CARA volunteer, believes that we should also take care of other creatures, not just our own species. She used to pursue another course but shifted to vet med because she realized she had the calling to help and heal animals.
“As human beings, we are gifted with higher intellectual capabilities compared with other species. We have the ability to take care of other creatures. I believe that it is our responsibility. Yes, we also have to take care of our own, but if all humans will choose to only care for fellow humans then who will be left to care for other species? I believe that other species should not be neglected while we look out for each other.”
Paula Marie Dehesa has a practical as well as a respectful standpoint. She believes that saving animals saves people. Here is her reasoning.
“A lot of people ask me why I chose vet med over human med. They always say that I’m wasting my efforts and that I should work to save people instead. But what they don`t realize is that saving animals saves people. I mean, (1) animals are a food source, (2) our buildings, pollution, garbage, houses, and other stuff like that took their habitat from them, (3) most human diseases come from animals and veterinarians have to control these diseases from the source to prevent outbreaks (like ebola or merscov) and (4) animals respect us, they give us love and compassion. The least we could do is to at least show them respect in return.”
A volunteer recently saw this emaciated dog, which looks like a pure Belgian Malinois, walking around Manila Peninsula Hotel area in Makati City. A lady tried to offer him water and food but he refused to eat. If you see this dog, please help by offering to foster him or look for fosters. CARA will guide you on the next steps. You may contact us at +632 532-3340 or 0910-7297026. Due to lack of funds, CARA is unable to help rescue all reported cases. WE NEED YOU TO HELP US. We are just a few volunteers with limited time and resources.
