CARA volunteers sometimes get this question: “Why help animals and not humans?”
The premise of this question is that helping animals and helping humans are mutually exclusive. But is it? The desire to help creatures that are often less able to defend themselves, especially from human cruelty, stems from compassion, doesn’t it? Just as people who are cruel to animals are more likely to be cruel to humans, people who are compassionate to animals are more likely also the ones who actively help other people in need.
I understand that it is difficult to answer properly in the face of those who would wish to belittle an advocacy. There are actually many very good reasons why we should help animals. I have compiled some of the answers of fellow volunteers and would also like to get your own take on this question.
The CARA Blog will be posting these answers in a series of weekly posts.
The plight of this poor dog was reported to CARA. The reporter saw it at the corner of Vito Cruz and Mercedes St in Manila (in front of Good 2 Go convenience store). The dog was very weak, unable to walk, and needed immediate rescuing. A sponsor from CARA’s network of supporters immediately stepped up. Unfortunately, CARA was not able to locate the dog. The dog might have moved or someone moved it away from the area.
