Rosa comes by our house at mealtimes, on the dot, without fail. She likes lying by the pool, or in the garden, belly up towards the sun. Rosa is just one of the many stray cats and dogs in the city. Unfortunately, many of these strays are not as lucky as our community cat Rosa.

Pet overpopulation has become a problem that organizations like CARA Welfare Philippines aim to address.

CARA is a non-profit, non-government organization that advocates animal welfare in the Philippines through education on responsible pet ownership, pet adoption events, and spay and neuter activities. Last May 30, CARA held its ‘Adopt a Pet’ event at Greenbelt 5’s Fashion Walk from 3 to 8pm. Mall-goers got a chance to meet with 20 adorable cats and three dogs looking for forever homes.

The event sought to spread awareness of the benefits of adoption to the mall visitors and to raise funds for the organization.

Mall-goers socialized and petted the animals. Many inquired about how to adopt and get involved in animal welfare advocacy. An open discussion about animal welfare was held.

Pet-themed merchandise was available for sale, ranging from pins to shirts to colouring books.

“Anong lahi nila?” many visitors asked. The CARA cats and dogs at the event were all rescued from the streets of Metro Manila. They are aspins (asong pinoy) or puspins (pusang pinoy). Many were in terrible shape but after some time of tender loving care in the hands of CARA and their foster parents these pets were soon in great shape, looking adorable and eager for forever homes.

Among them was the goofy and playful Bina, who was found with her front legs crossed and unable to walk. She is now walking, running and even jumping.

Then there was Peggy, the sweet cat who stirred up social media with her ‘pegged’ leg, or, what turned out to be an exposed leg bone.Just like Bina, it didn’t take long for a little love and care to rehabilitate Peggy so she will be ready for her new home.

All the other fur babies at the event had a unique story to tell. They are living testimonies to the effects of compassion to living creatures. By adopting them we are not just giving homes to abandoned animals, we are also championing love, happiness and compassion.

So if you’re looking for a new furry friend for your home, one might just choose you.
