Evils of Backyard Breeding have taken a Queen

We wish we can give you nothing but good news. But with heavy hearts we must inform you that Queen, the senior black lab that we took under our care last month, has passed on. We hope you will keep her and her story in your thoughts today.

Queen was an 11-year-old female lab that was kept by her former owner for breeding. When she got too old, she was discarded at a dumpster where a tricycle driver found her. Queen was covered in pea-sized ticks and fleas and smelled so bad that he could smell her from afar. The driver and his wife cleaned her up, removed all the parasites by hand and cared for her as best as they could. But they had meager means and could not provide proper shelter for an already weak senior dog. After they handed Queen over to us, she was diagnosed with Pyometra and had to undergo surgery. Her blood test results never got better, however, and sweet, gentle Queen died last Thursday of renal failure and complications from over-breeding.

Queen was not the first dog we rescued who was a victim of profit-hungry breeders. We know she won’t be the last. As long as there are people who choose to buy dogs from pet stores, public markets and “buy & sell” websites, there will always be dog breeders like Queen’s previous owner — people who see man’s best friend as puppy-making machines who can be discarded like garbage when they cannot produce anymore. (When Queen’s previous owner saw her with the couple who rescued her, he just said, “Sa inyo pala napunta” and walked off.)

We at CARA Welfare Philippines condemn these irresponsible dog breeders and appeal to everyone to not buy from them or from pet stores, public markets or buy-&-sell websites. If you are ready for a furry companion for your household, please consider adopting a rescued dog (or cat) as your first option. Not only will you be rewarded with the love and loyalty of a best friend that knows it has hit the jackpot with you, you will also help stop the puppy mill trade and save the life of a dog like Queen.
