  Animal Relief 7th October 09

Team:  Denise Wood (CARA), Barbara Greenwood (CARA), Dr Rizza Zunio , Dr Lyn Villarba , Daniel Jon Batinga and Miguel Dominic Alidio.

Area covered: Montalban

Transport: one 4x4, one taxi.

We met Craig Burrows in Montalban. Area is muddy, flooded in places but accessible.

Really great set up; expected to go street to street searching for the dogs, this wasn’t the case. Barangay had announced we were coming and people were told to bring their dogs to the basketball court. They had even provided tables and chairs for us; such civilized organization I really hadn’t expected. Barangay were there helping with the crowds and we gave 159 rabies shots and treated medical cases. We also distributed collars/leads and dog food, some of the dogs were very thin. The whole area had been previously flooded.

We ran out of everything, people were coming with dogs from the whole area. We have got a list of everyone who didn’t receive a rabies shot today and we are going back next Wednesday. The barangay have already announced this.

We also walked through the streets with cat food, one lady had over 15 cats all sheltering in her one room she called home. People genuinely cared for their animals and were so grateful that we were helping them.

For our next visit we still have over 100 rabies vaccines to do, we also need to take lots of food and collars etc.  We will also go to Dela Costa, this area is still heavily flooded and we couldn’t go today as it isn’t really accessible even in 4x4. Craig Burrows has organized a digger; they are still trying to get aid to the people stuck there. On Wednesday after doing the rabies and food at the basketball court we will head to Dela Costa, hopefully be then it will have dried up enough to be accessible.

This project has been made possible with the support of the International Fund for Animal Welfare http://www.ifaw.org
